New research has revealed that the overwhelming majority of EV drivers throughout the UK are using public chargers…
Popular Public Chargers
Research published by Zap-Map suggests that the vast majority of EV drivers in the UK are using public chargers. Indeed, of 4,300 surveyed drivers of electric vehicles, 90% said that they make use of public charging infrastructure. More generally though, all categories of charging are growing; including ‘en route’, ‘destination’ and ‘on-street’.
En route charging consists of using chargers at the likes of service stations and ‘charging hubs’. Its popularity is rising, with 37% of Zap-Map users now saying that they make use of it. In addition, a growing number of drivers are carrying out short charging sessions at places they regularly or periodically frequent, such as supermarkets and hotels.
A Changing Landscape
Melanie Shufflebotham, co-founder of Zap-Map, has spoken of the ‘changing landscape’ of charging behaviour in the UK. She said, “with the UK’s public charging network expanding rapidly, this report in partnership with TLT is key to understanding how the EV landscape is changing in front of our eyes”.
She continued, “identifying and acting on current usage patterns across en-route, destination and on-street charging will be crucial for future charge point planning for investors, charge point operators, local authorities and landowners alike. This data is already being collected and can be extremely useful in understanding where the hot spots are and how the key trends are evolving”.
Given the sheer volume of drivers using public chargers, it’s clear that they’re not simply the go-to option for those drivers who lack off-road parking at home; and therefore the ability to charge at home. This means that it’ll take even more infrastructure to facilitate the EV transition than some might have imagined.
