The AA has called on the government to introduce tax breaks for EV drivers who don’t have access to off-street parking…
Tax Breaks for the Chargerless
In order to ensure a more ‘democratic’ approach to charging electric vehicles, the AA has suggested that the government should introduce tax breaks for EV drivers without off-street parking access.
Around 40% of households don’t have access to off-street parking. This means they won’t be able to install a home charger, making EV ownership (potentially) much more challenging. As a consequence, the motoring organisation has said that these households, and those in rented accommodation, need better local charging infrastructure and better rates.
In order to improve the situation, the AA has suggested that the government could introduce a 5% cut on VAT on electricity for local chargers; matching the rates available to households with off-street parking. It’s concerned that, without this kind of support, the country will end up with a kind of two-tiered charging hierarchy.
More Affordable EV Ownership
Edmund King, President of the AA, commented on the present situation and how it’s inherently unfair. He said, “cutting VAT on public charging to 5% in residential and urban areas so it mirrors tax rates on domestic energy would be a good start and make EV ownership more affordable for those without off-street parking”.
He added, “in order to convince more drivers to make the switch to electric cars a more accessible charging network is crucial. We need more well-signed charge points installed in well-lit areas that are totally accessible for all including disabled or elderly drivers”.
