Car Club Membership Doubles
Collaborative Mobility UK (CoMoUK), a mobility charity, has revealed in a new report that car club membership in the UK has doubled over the last twelve months. The number of people joined, used or renewed a car club vehicle was up by 450,231 last year; an increase of 96%. In addition to the rising numbers of people using a car club, the research has also estimated that 20 private cars were replaced by each vehicle in the UK’s car club fleet. This currently possesses a fleet of 5,806 vehicles. It means some 116,000 vehicles have been taken off of the roads by members.
As a consequence of the reduced number of vehicles, the clubs are having a positive impact in terms of reducing both congestion and harmful emissions. CoMoUK’s report states that emissions for club vehicles are 27% lower than the typical vehicle in the UK. Moreover, 12% of club vehicles are electric; whereas just 1% are electric on average at the national level.
Untapped Potential
Notably, car club members report saving money. Some 73% of users has stated that they’ve saved money when compared to the costs of using their own vehicle. Many members also regularly use public transport (61%). Another 37% have said that they cycle at least once a week.
Richard Dilks, chief executive of CoMoUK, has said that the full potential of car clubs has yet to be realised. He said, “car clubs replace privately-owned cars with fewer and more efficient vehicles; which are easy and affordable to access 24/7 while boosting use of public transport and walking and cycling. Motorists can save thousands of pounds a year by not owning a car; and our survey shows this also results in them engaging in a more active lifestyle through walking and cycling”.
He added, “these schemes, along with other shared transport modes like bike and ride sharing, have the potential to dramatically reduce congestion on our roads and carbon emissions”.
