Collaborative Mobility UK (CoMoUK ), a mobility solutions charity, has suggested that new housing should have a cap on parking spaces…
Capping Parking Spaces?
New housing developments should possess just one parking space per household. That’s according to mobility solutions charity Collaborative Mobility UK. It wants the nation’s planning policy to be centered on ‘people and place’ instead car dependency. It believes the move would encourage people to use the likes of bike hire and car clubs.
CoMoUK wants public transport options and shared mobility options to be located closer to peoples’ homes; making them more attractive and accessible. For car sharing to become truly feasible for most people, it argues that parking spaces must be capped at one per household or less. In a guide, it states “the lower the ratios the greater the chance of breaking dependency on the private car and supporting the switch to sustainable modes”.
‘Behavioral Change’
Richard Dilks, chief executive of CoMoUK, commented on the need for a fundamental change in behaviour when it comes to how we approach transport. He said, “the UK Government’s commitments to reduce emissions shows the need to move to decarbonising options like shared transport. This behavioral change can be achieved through spatial planning design which encourages a shift away from low occupancy private car use”.
He continued, “new developments are continuing to be designed and built that do not properly consider the important role shared transport can play in delivering sustainability. Our study shows that making shared transport and active travel more convenient than car use will reduce people’s dependency on private vehicles”.
