The rising number of Clean Air Zones (CAZs) is encouraging fleets to increasingly use public transport options…

CAZs and Public Transport

New research, conducted by Europcar Mobility Group UK, suggests that Clean Air Zones (CAZs) are driving employers towards public transport. Nearly two-thirds of them (64%) plan on extending their use of public transport or shared mobility options; specifically to circumnavigate CAZ-related charges. Some 300 fleet managers were included in the research; and 87% said that their businesses would be affected by the rising number of CAZs in the country.

As a consequence of the new charges, fleets are having to adapt their strategies to an increasingly environmentally-conscious society; whilst also meeting the demands of their businesses. This is easier said than done, as the research revealed that one in five businesses don’t actually understand rules of different zones. Just shy of 30% of businesses hadn’t actually determined the financial impact CAZs would have on their fleets, either.

Fines and Charges

Ron Santiago, managing director of Europcar Mobility Group UK, commented on the research’s findings. He said, “clean air zones are a welcome move in the fight for improved air quality in our towns and cities, but the whitepaper findings highlight how important it is that fleet and business travel managers understand the rules and regulations if they are not to fall foul of potentially heavy fines and daily admission charges for non-compliant vehicles”.

He added, “a lack of awareness could impact the bottom line for many companies and a lack of planning will reduce their ability to remain flexible to changes in business demand.” Santiago concluded that long-term rental, shared mobility solutions and a greater use of public transport will all be indispensable to fleets in proximity of CAZs.
