The Department for Transport (DfT) is considering allowing longer, 48-tonne trucks to use British roads from as early as next year…

Larger Trucks On UK Roads

From as early as next year you may spot longer, 48-tonne HGVs on the nation’s roads. Following a nine-year trial, the DfT has concluded that longer-semi trailers (LSTs) are safer, more cost-effective and even better for the environment than their smaller variants. Respondents to a public consultation were also largely favorable towards introducing the vehicles.

It’s believed that the LSTs could eliminate one in eight freight journeys; ultimately by carrying the same amount of cargo via a smaller pool of vehicles. Moreover, the DfT believes the vehicles will help the government realise its Transport Decarbonisation Plan; reducing congestion, overall mileage and emissions. Nevertheless, safety continues to be the key priority. And, whilst the LSTs were proven to be safer, a variety of additional safety measures are still being considered.

‘A Vital Step’

Grant Shapps, the Transport Secretary, commented on the outcome of the LST trial. He said, “today’s announcement is a vital step forwards as we work to introduce more environmentally friendly freight to our roads and build back greener”.

Naturally, the timing of all this is significant. The UK is facing a significant shortage of HGV drivers; placing significant strains on supply-chains and a variety of industries. Much of this has been attributed to the coronavirus pandemic and the effects of Brexit. Larger trucks and lorries, ultimately, mean fewer vehicles. This, in turn, reduces the need for drivers. So, when the DfT says the vehicles may be approved for use as early as 2022, we’d be inclined to believe them.
