Diesel Company Cars Decline
Data released by the DfT has shown that diesel company cars very much remain in a state of decline in the UK. They’ve declined by 17.6% in just over a year. Falling from over a million vehicles to 829,000 in the first quarter of 2022. In addition, the number of privately-owned diesel vehicles has also declined. These fell from 11.1 million to 10.9 million (1.7%).
The greatest decline was recorded in London, which possesses an Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ). There, the number of private diesel vehicles fell from 155,274 to 116,796; that’s a fall of nearly a quarter (24.8%). Notably, sales for diesel models were less than half of those for all-electric models in the first half of the year; a testament to how the automotive industry, and transport in general, is changing.
What’s the Cause?
Jack Cousens, the AA’s head of roads policy, has offered his thoughts on why the fuel is declining. He said, “not so long ago, car owners were encouraged to buy diesel models to cut CO2 emissions and reduce their costs through diesel’s better fuel efficiency. Many older car owners bought one for what they thought would be their last car in retirement”.
He continued, “they now find themselves caught in the pincer of record pump prices that are 8p dearer than petrol. And the demonisation of the fuel through city access charges and parking costs that penalise these cars. Very often, this campaign against diesel is carried out by the very councils that encouraged their take-up through CO2-related residents car parking permit charges”.
