New research suggests that drivers are putting their safety at risk by being overly-reliant on what are, essentially, faulty systems…

Drivers ‘Risking Their Safety’

According to new research, conducted by Autoglass, four out of five drivers believe that their vehicle will warn them when its advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) become faulty. A substantial majority of motorists (72%) understand how ADAS can help to prevent collisions. But the majority of them also expect faults with it to appear on their dashboards.

As it stands, ADAS systems simply don’t have this facility. They can’t inform a driver if they’ve been calibrated, let alone if they’ve been calibrated correctly. A calibration might be carried out after a windscreen replacement or a minor accident. ADAS systems can contribute to safety via the likes of parking sensors, lane-keeping assist and blind spot warnings.

‘Incredibly Dangerous’

Chris Abbotson, national sales manager at Autoglass, commented on the research’s findings. He said, “advanced driver-assistance systems are dramatically improving road safety. But they can only do so if the sensors are properly recalibrated by a skilled technician”.

He continued, “it’s incredibly dangerous for a driver to be in charge of a vehicle if the onboard sensors are either not recalibrated or not recalibrated correctly; as they would likely be relying on safety systems that are unable to accurately identify hazards on the road”.

Autoglass has warned fleet managers to check that ADAS systems are regularly checked to determine whether they’ve been properly calibrated or not.

“When choosing partners for any windscreen work, fleet managers need to ensure they are working with the best technicians who have received the latest training to ensure they are capable of correct ADAS recalibration; and are aware of the latest technologies in vehicles,” Abbotson concluded.
