New data suggests that drivers throughout the country are still overpaying for their fuel at petrol stations…

Overpaying for Fuel

New data compiled by the RAC suggests that drivers are still overpaying for their fuel; despite the a general fall in prices at fuel stations. As it stands, the cost of filling a typical 55-litre petrol has fallen below £90 for the first time since the start of May. When compared with the peak in prices in early July, drivers are now saving £16 on a full tank.

The price of a litre of diesel has also fallen, but not to the same extent. It stood at 180.16p at the end of September, representing a fall of 3.5p. The cost of filling a typical diesel tank now sits at £99.09, having finally fallen below the £100 mark for the first time since late June.

Despite falling prices, the RAC has claimed that drivers are still overpaying by 10p a litre more than they should be; simply because fuel retailers haven’t passed on savings to customers.

Not Playing Fair

Simon Williams, fuel spokesman for the RAC, has accused fuel retailers of not playing fair. He said, “this is backed up by the fact that Morrisons, which was charging an average of 162p a litre for petrol at the end of September, is currently running a 5p a litre off promotion for customers spending £40 in store. This type of promotion tends only to be seen when supermarkets are benefiting from lower wholesale prices”.

He continued, “with oil producer group OPEC and its allies meeting today much will depend on how big their expected production cut turns out to be. But it goes without saying that any further output restriction will not be good for drivers as it will inevitably – as intended – push up the barrel price, ultimately making fuel more expensive2.
