Saving on Fuel
New research, conducted by Yesss Electrical, suggests that drivers could save up to 70% of their average fuel spends by switching to electric models. For perspective, that’s a potential saving of £627.84 a year. The firm reached the figure by comparing the average cost of charging an EV with topping up a diesel or petrol vehicle. Naturally, it used current energy and pump prices.
The increasingly popular Tesla Model 3 was used for the purposes of the research. It’s capable of 4.4 miles per kilowatt-hour or 4p a mile (based on current prices). That’s compared to a petrol capable of 49.2mpg, costing 13p a mile, and a diesel car achieving 55.4mpg, costing 12p a mile. This would leave drivers of the Tesla forking out just £265.82 when covering the UK’s average mileages.
Rising Cost of Living
Mark Abbey, director at Yesss Electrical, commented on the signifance of the research’s findings given the rising cost of living. He said, “the cost of living is continuously getting more expensive and with fuel costs rising, the pressure to keep up can be overwhelming. As well as saving money on fuel, EVs experience much less wear and tear than petrol and diesel cars resulting in minimal repair payments”.
A recent survey suggested that 39% of drivers are currently considering getting an EV purely because of rising fuel prices. As the purchase prices of EV models fall, they’ll inevitably become increasingly attractive from a financial perspective.
