New data from the RAC has shed light on how much drivers are being overcharged when it comes to fuelling up on petrol…

Petrol Drivers Overcharged

Petrol drivers were overcharged by £5 million every day in December, paying £156 million more than they should have. That’s according to new data published by the RAC. The organisation claims that the price of unleaded would have dropped by 12p per litre, should retailers have ‘played fair’ when wholesale prices dropped. Instead, they fell by just 2p, reaching 145.48p overall.

Diesel also remains overpriced by nearly 7p, with the current price sitting at 148.92p. The cheapest prices were found at Asda, with a litre of petrol costing an average of 141.81p. Sainsbury’s wasn’t far behind at 142.57p. Asda, incidentally, also has the cheapest diesel prices – at 144.9p a litre.

‘Scandalous’

Simon Williams, the RAC’s fuel spokesman, called the current prices ‘scandalous’. He said, “in the past when wholesale prices have dropped retailers have always done the right thing – eventually – and reduced their pump prices. This time they’ve stood strong; taking advantage of all the media talk about ‘higher energy prices’ and banked on the oil price rising again and catching up with their artificially inflated prices. Which it has now done”.

He added, “the trouble is every extra penny they take as margin leads to drivers paying even more as VAT gets added on top at the end of the forecourt transaction. This means the Treasury’s coffers have been substantially boosted on the back of the retailers’ action. We urge ministers to push retailers into doing the right thing for consumers”. William’s concluded that the only positive of the current prices is that they may drive people towards electric models.
