Chargers for the Education Sector
The education sector is due to play a major roll in building the UK’s network of chargers for electric vehicles. Plans are in motion to eventually install 50,000 chargers at the likes of schools, colleges and universities throughout the country.
eEnergy, working in partnership with EO Charging, hopes to contribute towards the Government’s 2030 target of 300,000 public charge points. It’ll launch an initial 200 chargers in April, which will rise to 2,000 by end the of the year.
Because of historically-high energy costs, charge points are inaccessible for many public sector organisations. This is something the partnership hopes to rectify by offering longer-term, fully serviced performance contracts (and without upfront investment).
An ‘Ambitious Rollout’
Harvey Sinclair, CEO of eEnergy, commented on the plan. He said, “the Government has rightly set ambitious net zero targets, and electric vehicles will play a fundamental role. However, ensuring everyone has access to reliable charging, especially for those who cannot plug in at home, poses considerable challenges”.
He added, “like many employers, schools face a growing demand for EV chargers just as energy costs reach record highs. Our ambitious rollout will make life easier for teachers and other drivers by offering an affordable and accessible alternative”. As it stands, eEnergy already provides energy to 600 schools. It plans to install 20 chargers at each school moving forward.
