An increasing number of EV drivers are using public charging infrastructure or chargers at their places of work…
Public and Work Chargers
New figures suggest that more EV drivers are making use of public chargers and charging infrastructure at their places of work. Back in 2021, 78% of EV drivers charged their vehicles at home. That figure has fallen to 56% today. Indeed, a YouGov poll (commissioned by CTEK) has revealed that 20% of EV drivers now charge at work, whilst another 20% charge at shopping centres. In addition, 11% charge at hotels and 8% charge at restaurants.
Despite people making further use of public charging infrastructure, there are lingering concerns that it remains insufficient. For instance, 71% of British motorists feel that the amount of chargers in the country is insufficient; the highest figure recorded in Europe. That said, this figure has fallen from 78% back in 2021.
‘Extremely Encouraging’
Cecilia Routledge, global director for CTEK, has commented on the new trends. She said, “it is extremely encouraging to see that the availability of public and destination charging facilities is starting to step up to meet the growing demand for out-of-home charging, as this is a vital factor in the overall acceptance and take up of electric motoring”.
She continued, “however, reliability of out-of-home charging remains an issue, and this is an aspect that needs additional focus, along with steps to reduce the complexity of payment and industry-wide commitment to rolling out EV roaming, which would give EV drivers better access to charging stations, in the same way that mobile phone users can simply access different networks as they travel around the globe”.
