Fleets across the country are adopting electric vans for their environmental benefits and reduced operating costs, research has revealed…

Benefits of Electric Vans

Research conducted by Arval Mobility Observatory has shed light on why an increasing number of fleets are taking on electric vans. A diverse range of reasons were given, but the most common was the reduced environmental impact of the vehicles (55%). It was followed by existing tax incentives (51%) and overall, total cost of ownership (50%).

Other reasons mentioned by fleets included lower fuel expenses (50%), improved company image (40%) and being able to access low emission zones (38%). Arval also enquired as to whether fleets were already operating electric vans or whether they intended to over the next three years. Some 9% were already operating them and 47% said they’d be looking to secure them in the near-future.

‘Still in Infancy’

Shaun Sadlier, head of Arval Mobility Observatory in the UK, commented on the research. He said, “these figures show how electrification in van fleets is still very much in its infancy, but also how quickly operators expect that process to get underway. By 2025, almost half expect to have at least some electric vans. The reasons for that speed of adoption are varied but convincing. The environment, CSR objectives and being seen to do the right thing in this sense are clearly major incentives”.

He continued, “it’s very interesting to see how awareness of the cost advantages of operating electric vans are becoming acknowledged among fleet operators. Half of them say both that total cost of ownership is in line or lower than petrol or diesel vehicles and that there are fuel savings to be accessed. For commercial fleets, that are very much driven by cost considerations, these are major incentives in the transition to electric power”.
