Home Charger Training

The AFP has suggested that, with much attention being paid to public chargers, home chargers are being overlooked by fleets. As a consequence, many fleet EV drivers are unaware of how they work and how best to use them; potentially leading to long-term problems.

In particular, there are concerns that drivers are simply treating their home chargers as they would any other charger; failing to think critically about when’s the best time to charge, and for how long they should charge their vehicles. According to the AFP, the organisation has received multiple requests from its members for home charger-specific orientation courses. There’s also bee an interest in properly showing drivers how to effectively operate EVs on the road.

The 20 – 80% Range

Paul Hollick, chair at the industry body, commented on the gap in knowledge concerning home chargers. He said, “our members are finding that many new EV drivers are treating their new vehicle in the same way as they might their mobile phone. They come home and they plug in their car or van overnight, no matter what the state of charge”.

He continued, “this isn’t good for mobile phones and it isn’t good for EVs. You shouldn’t seek to top up your vehicle continually but let the battery run down to the point where it needs charging if your journey pattern allows. Many experts recommend keeping the charge in a 20-80% range”.
