New figures, compiled by the AA, have revealed that the number of EVs breaking down due to insufficient charge has halved in two years…

Out of Charge Breakdowns Halved

If you needed further proof that ‘range anxiety’ is often unwarranted, consider recent data revealed by the AA. It’s noted that its out-of-charge callouts have halved over the last two years. Having once represented 8% of all breakdowns responded to by the motoring organisation, they now make up just 4%. Furthermore, some of that latter figure involved drivers making a call simply because they were low on charge.

Around a third of EV breakdowns actually involve problems that are similarly occurring in ICE models, such as tyre or battery faults. Other issues typically concern warning lights, charging equipment and battery monitoring systems.

The declining number of ‘out of charge’ breakdowns is probably due to a number of factors. Generally, range is improving across the board; with even the cheapest of EVs having significantly more range than they did in the past. In addition, the UK’s charging network is improving (albeit at a slower pace than some would like) making it easier for people to charge up. Motorists are likely becoming more familiar with the technology, too, making them less likely to fail to plan ahead.

‘A Very Long Way’

Edmund King, President of the AA, commented on the data. He said, “in 20 years of driving EVs I have only run out of charge once. My first EV was a Ford Think! Car with a 37-mile range and I once tried to drive from central London to St Albans on a dark, rainy night and didn’t quite make it. Yes, there have been occasions when I have been low on charge or come across chargers out-of-order, but it is hard to run out”.

He added, “of course, improvements can and are being made to the charging infrastructure but a little planning can take you a very long way. We are also now seeing EVs with much longer ranges and most new EVs can do at least 250 miles. Electrification is going mainstream and potential EV owners shouldn’t be put off by myths about range. Once you have tried an EV it is hard to go back”.
