New research suggests that an increasing number of fleets regard cutting their emissions as more important than reducing costs…
Cutting Emissions
Research conducted by Bridgestone and Webfleet Solutions suggests that British fleets are increasingly prioritising sustainability and reducing their emissions; even above reducing costs and general safety. In a survey, 45% of respondents from commercial fleets said that sustainability was their primary focus. Despite this commitment, most fleet decision-makers believe it’ll be years until they reach carbon neutrality. Indeed, HGV operators believe it’ll take an average of 7.5 years. For van fleets, they think it’ll take an average of 8.7 years.
The research also suggests that it’s not just a business imperative that’s motivating fleet decision-makers to go green. Some 61% of respondents said that they wanted to safeguard their own health, their families and future generations. That said, 60% have stated that they want greater support and guidance from the Government.
‘A More Sustainable Future’
Andrea Manenti, vice president North Region at Bridgestone EMIA, believes the research demonstrates the arrival of a new climate ‘zeitgeist’. He said, “these findings embody the generation-defining zeitgeist of climate change, with the road transport industry at the very epicentre of our collective efforts to secure a more sustainable future”.
He added, “strategic action is being spurred not only by regulation, but by increasing recognition that the cost of buying, operating and maintaining EVs – their total cost of ownership (TCO) – is now typically lower than for fossil-fuelled equivalents”.
For some businesses and fleets, then, reducing their emissions and environmental impact isn’t just a calculated business decision; it’s an ethical imperative. That’s good news for everyone.
