New research has revealed that millions of drivers in the UK are unfamiliar with the current drink-drive limit…
Drink-Drive Limit Confusion
A survey involving 1,004 motorists, conducted by the road charity IAM RoadSmart, has revealed widespread ignorance concerning the drink-drive limit in the UK. Just one-in-five of the respondents (23%) correctly guessed the current limit in England, Wales and Northern Ireland; which is 35 micrograms per 100 milliliters of breath.
Awareness was fond to be greater in Scotland. One in six of the respondents (60%) correctly guessed that the limit in the country was 22 micrograms of alcohol in 100 milliliters of breath. The results suggest that up to 15 million drivers in the UK may be ignorant of the legal drink-drive limit.
‘A Real Lack of Awareness’
Neil Greig, director of policy and research at the charity, commented on the survey’s results. He said, “our research highlights that there is still a real lack of awareness regarding how much alcohol is too much before it is illegal to drive”.
He continued, “we would like to remind drivers that individual characteristics such as body weight, food consumption, gender and metabolism will also have an impact on the reading. This is why we will always recommend ‘none for the road”.
IAM RoadSmart is calling on the Government to apply Scotland’s current limit to the UK as a whole. It also wants compulsory drink-drive courses for offenders and more roadside testing. All of these things, it claims, will help to reduce incidents of drink-driving and to improve safety on the road network.
