A new report has suggested that grey fleet issues and complications continue to worsen, putting businesses and drivers at risk…
Grey Fleet Woes
New research, conducted by telematics company TrakM8, has suggested that grey fleet issues are putting businesses at risk. It found that 30% of businesses have faced moderate or significant complications over the last 18 months. Moreover, 58% of fleets are actually managed by people without a fleet background. Shockingly, 18% of businesses don’t actually know how many grey fleet vehicles they possess. A further 14% don’t know who takes ultimate responsibility for them, either.
As it stands, businesses are responsible for non-company owned vehicles that employees use for business-related travel; including commutes to work. Should the vehicle possess a fault, the business and its owners can be prosecuted in the event of an accident; potentially facing incarceration. Which is why it’s so important that fleets understand their grey fleets, what they consist of and how to properly manage them; or, better still, eliminate them altogether.
‘Very Concerning’
Jim Hill, Marketing Director at Trakm8, believes the report’s findings are a call to action. He said, “the statistics revealed in our report are very concerning and highlight the fact that more education is needed on the risks grey fleet brings and the measures businesses can put in place to help mitigate them. It is clear that grey fleet issues have been accelerated due to the impact of the pandemic and it is imperative that businesses address this issue quickly, particularly as hybrid working becomes the norm”.
He continued, “through support from the Association of Fleet Professionals, our latest report not only gives a detailed insight into the impact the pandemic has had on businesses throughout the UK, but also provides a clear understanding of legislative requirements and a blueprint of the solutions available to keep grey fleet risks to a minimum”.
