A new survey has revealed that a significant majority of British motorists believe headlights are simply too bright…
Headlights too Bright?
A new survey, conducted by the RAC, sought to discover motorists’ perspectives on headlights. Of the 2,700 that took park, the overwhelming majority (89%) said that they’re too bright; often leaving them dazzled when behind the wheel. The problem also seems to be getting worse. For instance, 63% of the drivers who claim that they get dazzled said that it appears to be happening more consistently. Disturbingly, nearly a quarter of them (23%) say they’re dazzled ‘a lot more’ than they used to be.
The seriousness of being dazzled isn’t lost on drivers, either. Some 64% of the respondents said that being dazzled increases the risk of collisions. A further 67% struggle to tell the difference between dipped or full beam headlights.
‘Blinded’
Rod Dennis, a spokesman for the RAC, commented on why headlights might be dazzling. He said, “there are a number of factors that contribute to whether a headlight dazzles another driver or not. The most important being the angle of the headlights as you look at them. If they’re not angled properly – or the driver in the oncoming car has forgotten to dip their headlights – there’s every chance you’re going to get blinded”.
He continued, “modern LED headlight technology may also have a part to play as the human eye reacts to the so-called ‘blue light’ from LEDs differently to the ‘yellow light’ of conventional halogen headlights. This presents a real irony: the brighter and better your vehicle’s headlights are, the clearer your night-time view of the road ahead is, often it seems at the expense of anyone coming towards you”.
