New figures suggest that home charging an EV will soon cost nearly twice the amount it does now from October…
Home Charging Costs Soar
Energy costs are soaring in the UK, and placing an enormous strain on millions of households and a variety of industries. Unfortunately for EV drivers, this means that charging from home will cost nearly double what it does now from October onwards. Indeed, Ofgem has confirmed that energy cap rates will rise from 28p/kWh to 52p/kWh.
For perspective, this means that it’ll cost £13 to drive 100 miles in an EV (if it was charged was home) having originally cost an average of £7. Naturally, this means that EVs remain significantly more economical than the likes of petrol, diesel and hybrid models; but the advantage is mitigated. It remains to be seen whether further increases will follow – some commentators certainly believe that they will.
It remains to be seen whether rising charging costs will slow down the pace of electrification the car industry in the UK has seen over recent years.
Useful Advice for EV Owners
David Watson, CEO at electronics company Ohme, has offered EV drivers some advice in saving money on their charging costs. He said, “EV drivers should switch to an off-peak tariff for their home charging to ensure that they’re reducing some of the impact of this latest rise in electricity prices”.
He continued, “speak to your existing electricity supplier and find out if they offer an off-peak tariff, if they don’t then switch to a provider that does to get the full savings of running an electric vehicle”.
