Leicester City Council intends to introduce a parking levy which, it claims, will generate up to £95 million over ten years…
Leicester’s Parking Levy
Leicester City Council intends to introduce a parking levy, effectively charging businesses for offering employees parking spaces. Those with more than 10 spaces will be have to pay £550 a year for each space they have; securing a licence. That said, the council claims that nine out of ten businesses in the area will be exempt; due to not crossing the ten-space threshold.
Instead, it believes that there are between 450 and 600 larger businesses in the city that’ll be eligible to pay. The levy itself is designed to encourage people who regularly drive into the city whilst commuting to find alternative means of transport. It’s hoped that the funds that are raised will fund the likes of cycle lanes and walking networks. The levy still needs government-approval before it can go ahead, but the City Council hopes it’ll launch in early 2023.
‘Major Role in Financing’
Councillor Adam Clarke has called the parking levy plan ‘vital’. He said, “a workplace parking levy has been a consideration for some time in terms of addressing the city’s present and future transport needs. And it is clear it could play a major role in financing the kind of improvements set out in the draft Leicester Transport Plan; which are vital if we are to meet both the city’s transport needs and its environmental obligations”.
He continued, “the benefits of reducing traffic in the city are easy to see. Anyone commuting during the school holidays can see how much difference even a 10% drop in vehicle numbers makes. The Government would have to give us approval to bring in a scheme. But the more people take part in this consultation, the better chance we have of ensuring it can address local needs”.
