According to new research, a significant majority of fleets are now being influenced by a variety of company sustainability agendas…

Fleets Influenced by Sustainability Agendas

Research conducted by Europcar Mobility Group has found that 70% of fleets are being influenced by sustainability agendas. In addition, some 48% of them expect petrol and diesel vehicles to make up less than half of their fleets in 12 months. It’s thought that BEVs and hybrids will make up 36% of fleet vehicles, rising from the current 28%. Nearly 7 out of 10 fleets require ultra-low emission vehicles in order to navigate the likes of clean air zones.

The data, which was included in ‘Fit for Purpose: Fleet management in a Post-Covid World’ report, also shed light on the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. It’s caused some 75% of fleets to review their acquisition policy. Unfortunately, just one-in-three fleets have the means to adapt their fleet size on short notice. In addition, some 62% of the survey’s respondents had to extend their existing lease contracts; largely due to supply chain issues. Moreover, over half (52%) planned to increase their fleet size in the next 12 months.

Importance of Flexibility

Ron Santiago, managing director of Europcar Mobility Group UK, commented on the research and its findings. He said, “the consequences and subsequent adaptations that fleets had to make to their operations are here to stay; and for organisations that rely on their vehicles for their business to grow, they will need to ensure that they have an added layer of flexibility”.

He added, “it is no longer prudent to tie up large amounts of cash in purchasing vehicles outright. Or to be locked into leasing agreements that don’t allow businesses to ‘upfleet’ or ‘downfleet’ quickly”. He concluded that it’s the fleets capable of being ‘agile’ and taking advantage of new opportunities that’d thrive well into the future.
