According to new figures, mid-sized and compact EVs are now more affordable than ICE alternatives in the UK…

Mid-Sized EVs ‘More Affordable’

According to LeasePlan, mid-sized and compact EVs are now more affordable than petrol and diesel models. Its annual Cost Car Index, which assesses the costs of car-ownership (factoring in everything from fuel, insurance and taxes) explores affordability in 22 European markets; including the UK.

It discovered that a mid-sized EV like the VW ID.3 costs around £724 a month. That’s £95 less than an equivalent petrol model, like the Peugeot 508 and £37 less than a similar diesel, like the Opel Grandland X. Meanwhile, a compact EV such as the Citroen e-C4 costs £646 a month. That’s £72 less than a similar petrol and £63 less than a similar diesel. These savings are largely a product of energy costs and the current tax regime; this sees EV drivers paying zero road tax until 2025.

‘Never Been More Accessible’

Alfonso Martinez, managing director of LeasePlan, commented on the changes in affordability. He said, “as EV uptake continues to gain traction in the UK, drivers across the country should be considering their options for going electric. With both compact and mid-size EVs now more affordable than their petrol and diesel counterparts, driving electric has never been more accessible, which midst a background of soaring fuel costs, will be especially encouraging for the UK public”.

He added, “What’s more, the 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles and the expansion of Clean Air Zones across the country will continue to provide financial incentive for Britons to switch to EVs”. In other words, then, now’s the time for drivers to seriously consider transitioning to electric motoring – at least in some categories of passenger car.
