Fleets Pursuing Sustainability
Research conducted by Goodyear has revealed that in excess of 60% of British fleets now possess formalised sustainability targets. In addition, a further 27% intend to have a sustainability plan in place within the next twelve months; leaving those fleets without a ‘green’ policy as a small minority in the near-future.
The research also shed some light on what fleets are doing in order to become sustainable. Some 67% of fleets are using fuel-efficient tyres, 65% are using telematics to reduce fuel-consumption and a further 59% are centring driver training on conserving fuel. More niche solutions included retread tyres (36%), electric drivetrains (25%) and the use of higher capacity vehicles (21%).
Remaining Obstacles
Despite widespread enthusiasm for sustainability targets, a number of obstacles still make them difficult for some fleets. The most commonly cited included cost (52%) and the complexity of implementing necessary changes (36%). Moreover, 75% of the respondents said incentives would be more likely to put targets in place. Some 48% said they’d also appreciate easier solutions, too.
Maciej Szymanski, director of marketing for Commercial Business Europe at Goodyear, commented on the research. He said, “it’s heartening to see that fleets are responding so positively to the challenge of climate change. For such a large number to not only be taking action, but to be putting plans in place out of a genuine concern for environment, as opposed to simply to appeal to new customers, is incredibly encouraging”. He added, “the challenge facing the industry now is meeting those objectives, as well as stressing their importance to those fleets that haven’t yet taken action”.
