New research suggests that a significant number of fleet managers and decision-makers don’t properly understand electric vehicles (EVs)…

Fleet Managers Lack Knowledge of EVs

Research, conducted by LeasePlan UK, has revealed that a significant number of fleet managers lack a good understanding of EVs. In a survey of 200 decision-makers across the UK, 29% admitted that they lacked sufficient knowledge of the vehicles.

The sort of training they felt they needed also shed light on gaps in their knowledge. For instance, 53% would like to know how to maximise battery range. 53% would also like to know how to carry out vehicle checks. Some 40% wanted to know about the key differences between EVs and ICE vehicles; and 30% felt they’d benefit from health and safety training.

Despite the knowledge gaps, 9 out of 10 of the survey’s respondents said they were expected to be the ‘EV experts’ within their businesses.

‘Lay the Foundations’

Alfonso Martinez, managing director at LeasePlan UK, commented on the survey’s results. He said, “by now, most fleet-operating businesses have started to lay the foundations for their journey to electric. Whether that’s making initial assessments of their driver profiles or getting ahead of the curve and switching out their vehicles for EVs now; fleet decision makers need to be thinking about their next steps. And with the 2030 ban only nine years away and the introduction of multiple Clean Air Zones across the UK imminent, there’s no time to waste”.

He continued, “yet, our research reveals a significant knowledge gap around EVs within fleet teams. This is something that businesses urgently need to address, as a successful transition towards a zero emission fleet requires the right expertise and support to be in place”.

Martinez emphasised the importance of fleet managers in the transition to electric vehicles. He explained, “behind any smooth and efficient transition is a well-trained and resourced fleet manager. They are the backbone of the company fleet, and in most workplaces are considered the go-to person for all matters related to EVs. This means that they are the first port of call whenever anyone has any questions or issues.
