A new, and perhaps timely, five-point plan has been produced by FleetCheck that aims to improve fleet fuel efficiency…
A Five-Point Plan
FleetCheck has produced a five-point plan that’s designed to help fleets optimise their fuel efficiency. Naturally, this is largely in response to supply-chain issues that are affecting some fuel retailers. Paul Golding, managing director of the fleet software company, said the plan could be readily adopted by fleets.
He said, “we’ve been discussing internally how we can help fleets through the current crisis and the fact is that there is no easy answer. If drivers simply can’t get hold of the fuel they need, then there is no real solution”. He continued, “however, the advice we are providing here should help fleets to maximise mileage from the fuel that they can obtain and also to understand their fuel use better over time, in case similar situations arise in the future”.
Measure Consumption
Many fleets simply don’t measure how much fuel they’re using and this, as you might expect, creates a massive data gap. An easy way to create an accurate record is simply to use fuel cards when purchasing petrol or diesel.
Make Sense of Data
Consider using fleet-specific software that can breakdown your fuel-related data. This can help you identify problematic vehicles or drivers that are consuming too much fuel.
Prepare Vehicles
Drivers should be made aware of how they could be wasting fuel. For instance, do your drivers understand the impact of driving around needlessly with roof racks and heavy loads? Do they understand how an insufficient amount of air pressure in a vehicle’s tyre’s can cause efficiency to decrease?
Stress Economical Driving
A fleet’s drivers should be encouraged, from the very beginning of their employment, to drive in a way that’s conducive to a robust fuel economy. This means avoiding needless acceleration or harsh braking and using an appropriate gear at an appropriate speed.
Challenge When Necessary
Fleet decision-makers shouldn’t be afraid to question, or challenge, drivers that are consuming excessive amounts of fuel. Robust data can, of course, help in illustrating and evidencing any discrepancies.
