New Net-Zero Strategy

The government has recently published its ‘Net Zero Strategy’ document. A key proposal includes the enforcement of a zero-emission mandate; forcing car manufacturers to ensure that a certain proportion of their output is made up of electric vehicles. It’s hoped that the policy will help the UK reach its goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2050. It’s also thought that the mandate will play a vital role in ensuring that the 2030 ban on the sale of new ICE vehicles is properly implemented.

In addition to the mandate, the government is dedicating £620 million in providing zero-emission grants and installing more charging infrastructure; with a particular focus on residential streets. Around £350 million of the £1 billion Automotive Transformation Fund will also support the electrification of automotive supply-chains. Finally, the strategy will entail a number of trials for zero-emission freight and HGV trials; designed to determine their benefits and the infrastructure they’ll require to operate effectively.

‘Historic Transitions’

In foreword of the strategy document, Prime Minister Boris Johnson describes the plans as ‘historic’. He says, “this strategy sets out how we will make historic transitions to remove carbon from our power, retire the internal combustion engine from our vehicles and start to phase out gas boilers from our homes. But it also shows how we will do this fairly by making carbon-free alternatives cheaper”.

He continues, “we will make sure what you pay for green, clean electricity is competitive with carbon-laden gas, and with most of our electricity coming from the wind farms of the North Sea or state-of-the-art British nuclear reactors we will reduce our vulnerability to sudden price rises caused by fluctuating international fossil fuel markets”.
