The fleet industry is being advised to prepare their drivers for speed limiters, as vehicles will be fitted with them from next year…

Prepare for Speed Limiters

The European Commission has agreed to ensure that all new vehicles are fitted with speed limiters from 2022. In addition, a regulation will stipulate that all new cars that have already rolled off of production lines will need the ISA technology fitted by July 2024. As it’s likely that the UK will mirror the legislation, fleet decision-makers are being advised to prepare their drivers.

Speed limiters work via GPS and traffic sign-recognition technology. This determines the local speed limit. The vehicle’s engine’s overall power is then limited appropriately; although, crucially, it’s possible for a driver to override it by applying firm pressure to the accelerator.

A “Zero Tolerance Approach”

Peter Golding, managing director at FleetCheck, has spoken about the need to prepare drivers for the new technology. He said, “thankfully, macho attitudes towards speeding that were once quite common among drivers of company vehicles have reduced considerably in recent years. However, speeding tickets are still pretty common, as any fleet manager will tell you”.

He continued, “our view is that the introduction of ISA technology is a moment that employers should be seizing as an opportunity to make clear that there is no corporate leeway when it comes to speeding and the dangers it represents”.

Overall, Golding suggested that fleets adopt a “zero tolerance approach” to excessive speed. He explained, “with the long lead times currently being experienced by fleet operators, vehicles being ordered within the next few months will potentially arrive with ISA fitment; so this is very close to being a live fleet issue”.
