Registrations for BEVs and hybrids have reached a record market share in Europe, according to the latest industry sales figures…

New Record for EV Registrations

Data compiled in some 26 European markets have revealed the rising popularity of BEV and hybrid vehicles. Throughout July, a healthy 160,646 BEV and PHEV models were sold; making up a significant 17% of all registrations for the month. For perspective, this is the second highest monthly market share – after June 2021. It’s also the third highest figure ever recorded in Europe.

This isn’t just a question of hybrids doing all of the work, either. BEVs accounted for 47% of all ‘low emission’ registrations; suggesting a genuine move towards zero-emission motoring. The figures will come as a relief for various governments in Europe, all of which have obligations to reduce their carbon footprints and, in many towns and cities, to improve air quality.

Bad News for the Rest of the Industry

Whilst BEVs and PHEVs are performing well, the rest of the industry is facing serious challenges. A combination of staff shortages and severe supply-chain issues have forced most automakers to scale back production. There was a 24% year-on-year decline between July 2020 and July 2021; with overall volume declining from 1.27 million units to 967,830.

Felipe Munoz, Global Analyst at JATO Dynamics, commented on the situation. He said, “despite the efforts of national governments to boost consumer confidence, the impact of the pandemic is still being felt by the industry”. For now, then, things aren’t looking particularly good for automotive companies – beset by a host of diverse issues. It remains to be seen what the long-term impact will be, or for how long they can cope under the strain of chronic shortages and declining sales.
