Renault Zoe E-Tech Sets New Record
Range-anxiety, the fear of not being able to reach one’s destination in an electric car, remains a significant problem. Whilst most drivers cover less than 30 miles a day in the UK, many of us still feel that electric cars simply aren’t up to the task; despite range figures increasing all of the time. Recently, the Renault Zoe E-Tech has managed to cover a staggering 475 miles on a single charge; setting a new hypermiling record, and doubling its official range.
The record was recorded by the Mission Motorsport charity. Its team drove the supermini for more than 24 hours around Thruxton Race Circuit. It broke the previous record set by the car in 2018, which stood at 351 miles. Overall, the team managed to achieve 9.14 miles per kilowatt hour; averaging a speed of 19mph. Notably, however, the car was fitted with Enso range-extending EV tyres.
An ‘Incredible’ Achievement
Tom Barker, electrification manager for Renault UK, commented on the new record. He said, “what Mission Motorsport has achieved is incredible and everyone at Renault UK sends a huge well done to them. Not only is it testament to how far it’s possible to go on a single charge in a Zoe, even taking into consideration the optimum conditions and lowly speed, but it’s a great illustration of just how comfortable and usable it is, too”. He added, “there’s no doubt this was pretty extreme, but it’s further evidence that the Renault Zoe really does go the extra mile when it comes to viably being a household’s only car and that it’s suitable for covering all kinds of distance”.
Hypermiling naturally involves driving in a way that maximises fuel economy or battery charge. It’s not representative of how most people drive, or even everyday driving conditions. That said, the new record does demonstrate just how reliable, and potent, the latest battery technologies are. In the not too distant future, EVs will likely cover in excess of 400 miles per charge in general.
