The rising cost of heating could see a number of fleet drivers return to working from the office over the coming months…

Heating Costs and Office Working

FleetCheck believes that rising heating costs could lead to some fleet drivers working from the office once again; somewhat reversing the work-from-home trend that emerged as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Generally, working from home has been cost effective for fleet drivers; eliminating fuel costs to a considerable degree. Rising energy costs, however, will make it expensive to keep homes warm over the course of the winter.

Whilst this trend is unlikely be a general one, indeed people will continue to work from home, it will somewhat slowdown the transition to homeworking. In addition, it’ll lead to a number of considerations for fleet-decision makers across the country…

A Number of Fleet Impacts

Peter Golding, managing director at FleetCheck, commented on the future trend. He said, “working from home has been an overall mileage saver for fleets and if more employees start commuting, mileage will increase, which has obvious knock-on effects in terms of the amount of SMR needed”.

He continued, “the other is more subtle. Some company car drivers effectively became home workers during the pandemic and their journey to work was really no longer classed as a commute for risk management purposes. That situation could now reverse”.

Things could also change for EV drivers, too. Golding explained, “the picture regarding EV charging at work remains in flux and many businesses still give the power away to anyone who parks on their car park and wants to use it, whether it is for business or private mileage”.

He added, “this may have to change if more drivers use free company facilities for all of their charging needs. Electricity is becoming, or has perhaps already become, too expensive to be given away for non-work purposes”.
