Accidents Rise as Clocks Go Back
Enterprise Rent-A-Car has warned drivers to be extra cautious over the coming weeks. Its research suggests that road accidents rise by as much as 10%, for up to two weeks, following the clocks going back. As a provider of courtesy rental vehicles, the company saw that demand rose back in 2021 when clocks were winded back an hour.
Road collisions are more frequent during the colder months of the year, especially during the winter. This is due to darker mornings and evenings, in addition to more challenging weather conditions. This, combined with the change in routine brought about by the clocks going back, can create a perfect storm for difficult and dangerous driving conditions.
Reducing Risk
Stuart Sandell, head of replacement sales for the UK and Ireland at Enterprise Rent-A-Car, commented on the data. He said, “many people are now either back in the office full-time or coming in several days a week, and they’ll be driving home in darker, more wintry conditions in the days after the clocks go back. A 5.30pm journey home in the twilight suddenly becomes a more treacherous journey home in the dark”.
He continued, “allowing extra time and planning your trip carefully will help to reduce risk, while carrying a few essentials in the car will help if you do break down or have an incident. We’re also advising businesses that allow employees to drive their own cars for business trips to ensure they check on the maintenance of those vehicles and to consider alternative forms of transport where possible”.
