None for the Road Resolution
A new analysis of drink-driving related collisions has revealed that August is typically the worst month of the year; with the highest number of people being injured or killed. This may come as a surprise to some, who may think that December, with the Christmas holiday, is the peak month for drink-driving.
What it means is that, effectively, drink-driving is a year-long hazard. And with England and Wales possessing the highest alcohol limit in Europe, road safety charity Brake is calling for action; suggesting that no limit of alcohol can truly be considered safe when it comes to driving. In particular, it wants drivers to adopt a ‘none for the road’ New Year’s resolution.
Change the Culture
Jason Wakeford, head of campaigns for Brake, commented on the drink-drive phenomenon. He said, “thousands of people are being needlessly killed and injured at the hands of drink-drivers every month. We need to change the culture around drink-driving, starting with more awareness that any amount can be deadly”.
He added, “while measures such as effective ongoing police enforcement and public information campaigns, including THINK!, are helping to reduce deaths and injuries, the Government should follow Scotland’s lead and reduce the legal limit, as per the call from the Safe Roads For All Alliance. Such a move would make it clear to drivers that no amount of alcohol is safe when behind the wheel”.
