Smart Motorways ‘Safest’ Roads
National Highways has claimed that new data suggests that smart motorways are the safest roads in the UK; in terms of both serious and fatal casualties. In a new report, the organisation has stated that all three ‘smart’ motorway formats are safer than conventional roads; despite ongoing safety surrounding their use. In particular, it’s been noted that the formats are significantly safer than the nation’s a-roads.
Whilst conventional motorways have lower personal injury collision (PIC) than other types of road, they have higher casualty rates. In simple terms, this means that when a collision occurs on a conventional motorway people are more likely to suffer serious injury or death than on a smart motorway.
In addition, casualties caused by stopped vehicle collisions were found to be lowest on both conventional and smart motorway formats.
But There’s More Work To Be Done
Nick Harris, chief executive of National Highways, has stressed the safety of smart motorways and the organisation’s commitment to improving safety. He said, “every road death is a tragedy, and our thoughts are with those who are affected. The latest data shows that, overall, in terms of serious or fatal casualties, smart motorways are our safest roads”. He added, “we are continuing our work to make them our safest roads in every way”.
Neil Greig, director of policy and research at the road charity IAM RoadSmart, welcomed safety improvements but stressed that there’s more work to do. He said, “statistics may show that smart motorways have fewer fatal crashes than conventional motorways, but far too many drivers don’t feel safe on them”. He continued, “it is vital that National Highways build on this report to keep the public informed; and continue to raise awareness of how to drive safely on smart motorways. So drivers feel confident to use these major national routes rather than avoiding them and travel on riskier A-roads”.
