The number of people using public transport dwindled during the coronavirus pandemic, but new data suggests the sector is recovering…
Return of Public Transport?
Data from Transport for London (TfL) suggests that, at least in the capital, public transport usage is returning to normal. For instance, the use of the tube increased by more than 25% throughout January; meaning its now at 60% of pre-pandemic levels during weekdays. The figure is higher on weekends, too. Meanwhile, bus usage is on the rise as well. Figures have been consistently higher than 50% of pre-pandemic levels since around April 2021. But figures rose by a significant 8% in January; largely due to restrictions being lifted. Overall, bus usage is now at around 75% of pre-pandemic levels. Indeed, some routes in the city have actually returned to their original levels of usage.
The figures suggest that, slowly but surely, the public’s confidence in public transport is returning. This will be welcomed news for TfL, as it continues to negotiate with the government over the issue of long-term funding. Before the pandemic, London contributed £36 billion to the treasury in 2019. TfL itself contributes around £7 billion to the economy and employs 43,000 people.
A Sustainable Recovery
Seb Dance, deputy mayor for transport, said the recovery of public transport in the city is crucial to the economy. He said, “London’s transport network is crucial for a sustainable recovery, and it’s fantastic to see passengers confidently using it as they return to workplaces and to enjoy all the city has to offer. The increased footfall is great news for London’s businesses and hospitality venues which have been hit so hard by the pandemic”.
He added, “it’s crucial that the Government agree long-term capital funding, so we are able to keep these services running, to aid both London’s recovery and that of the wider country. Throwing that all away now would be a tragedy with far-reaching consequences for Londoners and rest of the UK”.
It remains to be seen whether public transport will recover outside of London. But, as restrictions are progressively eliminated, it’s likely that similar trends will occur.
