Transport for London (TfL) will be increasing fines for red route contraventions in London, hoping to improve safety and reduce congestion…

Red Route Fines

From January 17th, Red Route fines will be increased by a considerable 23%, rising from £130 to £160. TfL hopes that the increase will provide a tougher deterrent and improve road safety in the capital. The increased fine follows data revealing that there was a 26% increase in the number of PCNs issued for bus lane, moving traffic, parking and loading offences between 2016 and 2019.

The fine for Red Route contraventions hasn’t been increased since 2011. The change, which is inline with inflation, follows a public consultation that was held last summer. Red Routes in London make up just 5% of the capital’s road network. However, this 5% carries 30% of its total vehicular traffic. As a general rule, coming to a stop on a red route is prohibited. According to TfL, ignoring Red Route rules can pose serious safety risks and dramatically increase congestion.

‘Eye-Watering’

Nicholas Lyes, the RAC’s head of roads policy, has been critical of the costlier fines. He explained, “while most drivers accept the need for enforcement to make roads safer and less congested, this increase in the level of fine is pretty eye-watering and not far off the fine for a serious motoring offence such as illegally using a handheld mobile phone”.

He continued, “this change also comes after a recent permanent hike in the Congestion Charge and the expansion of the Ultra-Low Emission Zone; which means driving in and around central London could well become even more expensive for some of the capital’s beleaguered drivers”.
