Transport for London (TfL) will soon being rolling out significantly reduced speed limits throughout the nation’s capital…

TfL Lowers Speed Limits

Nine miles of TfL administered roads in London are due to receive lower speed limits; as the organisation works to prevent road deaths. 20mph zones are being set up on the likes of the the A13 Commercial Road in Tower Hamlets, the A23 London Road in Croydon, the A107 corridor in Hackney and the A10 – A503 corridor in Haringey. A 30mph limit will also be introduced to the A10 Great Cambridge Road in Enfield.

TfL chose the roads on the basis of identified risk to road-users. According to research, being hit by a vehicle moving at 20mph means that a victim is five times less likely to be fatally injured than if they were hit at 30mph. The new speed limits are part of a broader initiative to render 140 miles of TfL’s network 20mph by 2024.

Saving Lives

The new speed limits will be accompanied by appropriate signage and road markings. TfL will also be working closely with the Metropolitan Police; ensuring that the new limits are enforced and that drivers understand the new rules. Nevertheless, TfL has said that its strategy to improve road safety in London may be compromised if it doesn’t reach a long-term funding agreement with the government.

Lilli Matson, chief health, safety and environment officer at TfL, commented on the reduced speed limits. She said, “the new 20mph speed limits will not only save lives but will also encourage Londoners in these communities to travel in more active and sustainable ways. We’re committed to eliminating unsafe speeds and dangerous driving across our network. And are working closely with our Metropolitan Police partners to ensure the new speed limits are robustly enforced”.
