In response to soaring fuel costs in the UK, the AA is calling on the Government to introduce a further cut to fuel duty…

AA Calls for Fresh Fuel Duty Cut

Fuel prices have risen each day this week; with the cost of a litre of petrol now costing 8p more than it did last week. Tuesday actually saw the highest daily rise in 17 years. It now costs over £100 a to fill an average petrol car.

According to the AA, these rises simply aren’t sustainable; and are making the cost-of-living crisis considerably worse. It’s calling on the Government to take urgent action in controlling prices. In particular, it wants a ‘fuel stabiliser’ to be introduced. This would entail reducing fuel duty when prices go up and then increasing it when prices drop; providing consumers with greater clarity.

The motoring organisation also wants a national Fuel Price Checker which, it claims, will “stop the postcode lottery when it comes to rip-off fuel prices”. Such a checker is already used in Northern Ireland, where both petrol and diesel are, on average, 6p cheaper than in the rest of the UK. Finally, it’d like a 10p cut in Fuel Duty.

‘Particularly Nasty for Workers’

Luke Bosdet, the AA’s fuel price spokesman, commented on the surging fuel prices. He said “the £100 petrol tank has been dreaded and been particularly nasty for workers refilling their cars with the post-Jubilee return to work. The more than 8p-a-litre leap in average petrol costs over a week has been a huge shock but at least, for now, the threat of the £2-a-litre average on forecourts has receded”.

He continued, “it’s also important to remember that the Government is still benefiting from the high fuel prices by taking around 30p in VAT from every litre sold. This compares to just 25p before Russia invaded Ukraine. On top of this the Government is still collecting 53p fuel duty from every litre”.
