Fears that a significant backlog would create an MOT rush have seemingly failed to materialise, according to new figures…

MOT Rush Fails to Materialise

During the height of the coronavirus pandemic, fears were expressed that the UK could end up facing an MOT rush; a product of deferred tests. However, new data has revealed that testing figures have remained relatively stable. Epyx, using information acquired via its 1link system, discovered that there were 52,000 MOT tests carried out over the course of September. For perspective, 49,000 were conducted in the same month in 2019, well before the start of the pandemic.

This should be welcomed news for fleets and motorists alike, as there’s little risk of anyone being unable to book a test when they’re required. It’s also a testament to the relative health of the UK’s garage industry, which has been able to return to regular conditions after a period marked by significant disruption.

‘A Very Normal Month’

Debbie Fox, commercial director at Epyx, commented on the company’s findings. She said, “there was a slight panic over the summer about the capacity that may be available for fleet MOTs. With the DVSA reporting that more than half a million additional tests would be needed in September because of deferrals”. She added, “however, our figures show that this was a very normal month for fleet MOTs and indeed, if you look over the statistics across the entire pandemic, company car and van operators appear to have continued to book MOTs in a relatively normal manner”.

Fox concluded that slight spikes were the product of regular drivers; with Fleet activity reflecting regular patterns. This will, again, be a relief for fleet decision-makers. Especially following additional admin that’s likely been caused by the nation’s fuel crisis.
