Fuel Price Gap at Record High

A new analysis of fuel prices in the UK has revealed that the price gap between petrol and diesel is now a record high. Diesel is now a considerable 17p per litre more than petrol, sitting at an average rate of 180.22p. Meanwhile the petrol average sits at 162.96p throughout the country.

Diesel has almost always been pricier than petrol, at fuel stations or anywhere else. Generally, however, it’s cost around 5p more per litre than petrol. Whilst petrol has sometimes overtaken diesel, it’s never done so by more than 2.5p. Naturally, the news will be unwelcome by the nations diesel drivers; and especially by fleet or commercial drivers, who typically rely on the fuel for traditionally superior mpg.

What’s Going On?

Simon Williams, the RAC’s fuel spokesman, commented on the record-high price gap. He said, “while average prices of both petrol and diesel have dropped considerably from the all-time highs of the summer, diesel is now a record 17p a litre more expensive than unleaded. The gap between the two fuels is normally around 4p a litre but this has widened since Russia invaded Ukraine. Prior to this, diesel had only ever been as much as 11p dearer than petrol back in March 2020′.

Williams also shed some light on why the price gap had become so high. He explained, “several factors are combining to make diesel more expensive. While the EU is not set to ban Russian diesel imports until February 2023, the UK has already done so. This is significant as we used to import a third of our diesel from Russia”.

It remains to be seen when the gap will close. However, as long as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine rages, it’s likely to remain significant.
