A new report on electric cars has shed light on the urgency of the UK’s looming shortage of charging points…

Desperate Need for Charging Points

The UK needs between 40 and 50 additional charging points a day if it’s to meet its targets. That’s according to a new report produced by New Automotive. Called ‘State of Switch’, it’s determined that a lot more needs to be done if the nation is to keep up with the ‘exponential’ growth of electric vehicles.

As of now, there are 24,000 public chargers dotted across the nation; although there’s a concentration in the south of the country and in major cities. Of these, some 4,000 or so are rapid chargers. The report, however, suggests that 230,000 – 280,000 chargers will be needed by 2035 in order to meet demand.

Another notable finding was that hybrid vehicles may actually jeopardise the government’s environmental targets. It states that, based on current projection, hybrids are due to make up between 70 – 80% of the market by 2027. This would make it impossible for a government to realise existing net-zero targets.

‘A Rapid Transition’

Gi Fernando, chair of New AutoMotive, commented on the report’s conclusions. He said, “the UK needs a rapid transition to electric cars to get ahead in the global race, bring down the cost of driving and to meet our environmental commitments. As our report finds, the UK has made great progress with sales of electric cars booming. But there remains a long way to go before every car on the road is electric”.

He continued, “until now data sources on electric cars have been incredibly scattered and difficult to interpret. This is why we’ve worked over the last year to create a comprehensive and independent summary analysing all relevant data in a single report”.
