Oxford will soon possess the nation’s first Zero Emission Zone (ZEZ), charging ICE and hybrid vehicles to enter…
UK To Get Its First ZEZ
From February 28th, Oxford will possess the first ZEZ in the country. It’ll see daily charges introduced for any petrol, diesel or hybrid vehicles seeking to enter; making it far more comprehensive than other measures introduced elsewhere, such as Clean Air Zones (CAZs). Depending on the emissions of a given vehicle, daily charges will range from £2 – £10. Automatic number plate recognition technology will be used to enforce the new rules.
Some operators will be able to apply for temporary exemptions, but only all-electric vehicles will be permanently exempt from the charges. For the time being, the ZEZ will cover a relatively small number of streets in the city centre. These will include the likes of Queen Street, Cornmarket Street, New Road, Market Street and Ship Street. It’s hoped that the trial run will provide local authorities with useful information; before the ZEZ expands to cover a larger part of the city.
‘Concrete Action’
Cllr Duncan Enright, Oxfordshire County Council’s cabinet member for travel and development strategy, commented on the upcoming launch of the ZEZ. He said, “the first ZEZ scheme in the country is launching in Oxford. We are taking concrete actions to improve air quality in the city and to make it cleaner and safer. Our vision is to create a zero-carbon transport network by 2040 and the ZEZ pilot is an important step towards achieving that vision”.
He added, “we will learn from the pilot and in the coming months we will consult with local communities as we develop plans to expand the ZEZ across the city centre. We hope that residents, businesses and visitors will join us in our journey towards a carbon neutral future”.
