MOT

New research, conducted by the AA, has revealed the top five reasons why a vehicle is most likely to fail the MOT test…

The Research

Research conducted by AA Approved Garages has shed light on why vehicles are most likely to fail the MOT test. Involving data concerning 3.75 million failed tests, the research has exposed that faults concerning suspensions, brakes, tyres and visibility issues are the most prevalent.

However, most drivers have an inaccurate view of what’s most likely to go wrong. In a poll of more than 13,000 motorists, 43% stated that they believed tyre-related damage to be the primary reason MOTs are failed. On average, the respondents believed that the average MOT failure rate is 39%; whilst it’s actually 29%.

A Chaotic Scramble

AA Approved Garages has stated that around ten million MOT tests are due to take place throughout the autumn. This is largely due to the coronavirus pandemic, and the subsequent MOT extension put in place by the Government. In which case, it’s advising drivers to book a slot sooner rather than later.

Penny Stoolman, managing director of AA Approved Garages, said “with more than 10 million MOT tests due to take place, the scramble for slots could be chaotic”. Should vehicles fail their tests, the situation could become even more complicated, costly and time-consuming for fleets and businesses.

Top Five MOT Failures

1) Lamps, reflectors and electrics (3,731,659 failed tests)

2) Suspension systems (2,947,006 failed tests)

3) Brakes (2,231,313 failed tests)

4) Tyres (1,998,110 failed tests)

5) Visibility (1,611,373 failed tests)
