A think tank is calling on the government to introduce a significantly earlier ban for ICE fleet vehicles, including cars and vans…

An Early Ban For Fleet ICE Vehicles?

The government should bring forward its ban on vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICE) within the fleet industry; banning cars and vans in 2022 and HGVs in 2025. That’s according to the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), a think tank.

As of now, the government intends to ban the sales of new ICE vehicles from 2030. With sales of hybrid vehicles following in 2035. However, the IPPR claims the date needs to be earlier for fleets in order to ensure that businesses take adequate action in pursuing decarbonisation. It claims the current approach would actually see a 28% increase in car use by 2050; and an overall increase in vehicular traffic by 11%.

In addition to the earlier ban on fleet ICE, the IPPR has also called for additional funding for public transport. In particular, it’s suggested an additional £6 billion in promoting both walking and cycling.

‘The Urgency of the Climate Crisis’

Luke Murphy, head of the IPPR Environmental Justice Commission, explained the organisation’s recommendations. He said, “the urgency of the climate crisis cannot be overstated. Yet little progress has been made in cutting transport emissions over the past three decades. This imperative for urgent action creates a once-in-a-generation opportunity to put in place a new approach to how we all travel”. He added, “the Government’s current preferred strategy places an overwhelming focus on the shift to electric vehicles. While superficially attractive because of its offer of continuity, such an approach will not deliver for people or planet”.

Murphy concluded, “we need to massively expand the provision of and affordability of clean public transport options, such as trains, buses and trams, while helping more people to regularly walk and cycle, alongside a shift to electric vehicles for those that need them”.

As of now, transport is the UK’s largest contributor of greenhouse gases – producing 22% of the total. Of this, car’s contribute around 60% of the emissions.
