Transport Scotland has announced that it’ll be dedicating £30 million in supporting the adoption of electric vehicles in the country…

EVs Receive Support from Transport Scotland

Transport Scotland will be allocating £30 million to supporting the transition to electric vehicles in the country. The money will be used to finance the likes of interest-free loans for EVs, car clubs and zero-emission community transport. Funding is also being prioritised for demographics that are most in need. These include rural residents and businesses, the taxi sector and light commercial vehicles. People living in urban areas, who lack off-road charging, are also set to benefit.

Over the 2022/3 financial year, funding will be made available via a number of initiatives. Some £28m is available for the Low Carbon Transport Loan, £1.7m is available in the form of infrastructure grants and £1.75m has been set aside for Plugged In Communities and Community Transport. Thus far, £165 million has been allocated to support interest-free loans on purchasing electric vehicles.

Meeting Climate Targets

Jenny Gilruth, the Scottish Minister for Transport, emphasised the government’s commitment to electric transport. She said, “whether it’s electric miles or petrol miles, we know we need to reduce car kilometers by 20% across the board to meet our climate targets. Coupled with continued support for zero emission car clubs, I’m pleased we’re expanding support for community transport schemes. This will help eliminate the need for individual car ownership; and ensure it’s not just the wealthiest in society who can benefit from modern EVs”.

She added, “our funding package of over £30m for zero-emission grants and loans will be refocused to support the many people and businesses; particularly in rural areas, who still require access to vehicles. By providing interest-free loans for used electric cars and for new light commercial vehicles and taxis, we continue to support our ambition to phase out the need for new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030.”
