According to new figures, the vast majority of EV drivers in the UK use public chargers and many use them on a regular basis…
Widespread Use of Public Chargers
New data from Zap-Map has shed light on how many EV drivers are using public chargers in the UK. The vast majority (93%) are making use of the infrastructure. Moreover, 40% of them are using public chargers at least once a week. Zap-Map has put this increased usage down to the increased availability of ultra-rapid chargers throughout the country; with the total number of these growing by a significant 60% in 2021 alone.
The data suggests that ultra-fast chargers are allowing EV drivers to cover greater distances; something that was also dependent on EV models being made to cope with faster rates of charging. There’s also be a rise in popularity of so-called ;charging hubs’, which often possess multiple public chargers, as well as cafes and shops.
Crucial Infrastructure
Melanie Shufflebotham, Zap-Map co-founder and chief operating officer, has stated that the new data demonstrates how important public charging infrastructure is. She said, “as the number of EV drivers on the road approaches half a million, a robust charging infrastructure is essential, and the public charging network is growing and developing to meet these changing needs”.
She added, “the demand for high-powered chargers revealed in this report indicates that ultra-rapid chargers and charging hubs continue to be a crucial area of investment – for the simple fact that they make long journeys easier”. In other words then, the nation needs more ultra-fast public chargers to increase the confidence the public has in EVs.
