Tyre Prices Rise
For fleets, the price of new tyres has risen by a painful 33% in the last two years; placing a significant strain on them at a time of great economic uncertainty. Indeed, many fleets are facing rising costs across the board; especially given that significantly delayed vehicle deliveries are forcing them to maintain older vehicles and for longer periods of time.
When it comes to tyres, however, cost-saving can be challenging. After all, duty of care obligations necessitate keeping on top of maintenance, and ensuring that replacements are made consistently and with appropriate options. Fortunately, new connected technology may offer fleets a significant lifeline.
Can New Technology Help?
Matt Waller, director of connected car at Fleetcor, has spoken about new technologies that could help fleets take control of their spend on tyres. He said, “there are a number of tools on the horizon that will help them to improve their tyre management and forecast future spend much more accurately than anything else currently available”. In particular, he claims that new connected technologies will provide more accurate data concerning the likes of vehicle motion and tyre pressure.
Waller continued, “this will mean that complex algorithms can be developed that can accurately measure key elements of tyre management including current tread depth, as well as predicting when specific tyres will need replacing. These improved forecasting tools will allow fleets to take tighter control over tyre budgets, ensuring all purchasing and other tyre related expenditure is carried out through the most cost-effective channels”.
He concluded, “this is becoming particularly important when similarly dramatic price increases are being seen across multiple areas of service, maintenance and repair (SMR) expenditure.”
