New research suggests that British businesses are adapting their travel policies around homeworking at a faster rate than their EU counterparts…

Adapting to Homeworking

A by-product of the coronavirus pandemic is the rising number of people working permanently, or occasionally, from home. As a consequence, fleets and businesses have had to adapt their travel policies in order to meet new realities. But British businesses have seemingly adapted relatively easily. Research conducted by the Arval Mobility Observatory Barometer suggests that they’ve done so more quickly than businesses in the EU, too.

Of the businesses that have implemented changes in the UK and EU (9% and 7% respectively), two-in-five (39%) British businesses have introduced mobility solutions for employees who are ineligible for a company car compared to one-in-five (19%) in Europe. In addition, 37% have introduced car sharing for employees in the UK compared to 25% in the EU. Finally, 38% have revised models or mileage policies concerning company cars in the UK as opposed to 29% in Europe.

Not a ‘Major Movement’

Shaun Sadlier, head of Arval Mobility Observatory in the UK, commented on the research. He said, “the trend towards increased homeworking has been one of the most visible effects of the pandemic for businesses; and there is clearly potential for making changes to travel policies in response.

He continued, “perhaps a surprising aspect of our findings is that the numbers who have done so are relatively small; around 9% of the UK companies surveyed in the Arval Mobility Observatory Barometer and 7% in Europe. It would be an exaggeration to call this a major movement”.

Sadlier nevertheless welcomed the implementation of various concepts. He explained, “some ideas are being implemented. Perhaps the most interesting are around developments in mobility solutions. This is taking several forms – a move towards their adoption for employees ineligible for a company car, the introduction of car sharing, and the development of a range of alternative transport modes such as bikes and scooters”.
