The UK is due to receive what will be its first public hydrogen filling stations for commercial vehicles…

New Hydrogen Stations

With the increasing electrification of the UK’s automotive industry, the role of hydrogen is easily overlooked. However, this might be starting to change. Element 2 has partnered with Exelby Services to open, what will be, the nation’s first public hydrogen refueling stations. These will be located on the M6 and the A1(M).

More specifically, the new hydrogen infrastructure will be installed at Golden Fleece in Cumbria and Conegarth in Yorkshire. Both will be open to hydrogen heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). Both Element 2 and Exelby said that they’re responding to commercial demand for more sustainable, low-carbon forms of transport.

‘A Pivotal Moment’

Tim Harper, chief executive officer at Element 2, commented on the new partnership. He said, “this partnership is a pivotal moment in bringing hydrogen refueling to the UK’s roads. Together with our forward-looking partner Exelby, we will provide a turnkey solution for refueling hydrogen HGVs on key haulage routes in the North of England”.

He added, “we’re building the UK’s network of hydrogen refueling stations in response to growing demand from fleet owners and operators as they accelerate the transition of their HGV fleets to zero emissions, which will be critical in helping the UK meet its zero carbon targets”.

Rob Exelby, managing director at Exelby Services, said “following the ever-increasing global focus on tackling climate change, now is the time to be proactive and embrace low and zero carbon alternatives to diesel drivetrains”.
